The company was formed in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre in the village of Le Sentier, Switzerland. As the business grew, Antoine began producing watch movements of varying types and ended up with 125 different types. When they were able, Antoine was joined by his two sons and the company began producing movements for sale to other companies (who would re-brand them in their own name). The company produced minute repeaters, calendar movement watches and chronographs.

In 1903, Antoine’s grandson forged a strong business relationship with Edmond Jaeger (of Paris) on the strength of the movements LeCoultre was making that were of Jaeger’s design.

Their business synergy grew over time and by 1930 they had developed the Atmos clock, which obtained its energy from changes in atmospheric pressure and meant it did not need to be wound. By 1938, the firm officially became known as Jaeger – LeCoultre.

The company is now owned by the Richemont group and produces movements for Jaeger LeCoultre watches instead of for rival firms.
