The very first version of the famous automatic chronometer wristwatch was launched in 1952, when its 12-sided dial caused a design sensation. It had a steel case water-resistant to 30 m, a deluxe dial with polished riveted gold hour markers and polished gold Dauphine hands as well as reinforced crystal.

Following the launch of the Manhattan in 1982, the Omega Constellation line adopted a highly contemporary look that helped it become the "style flagship" line of the company. The aesthetics of the watch were improved by means of four claws (2 on each side of the dial) that pressed the sapphire crystal against the top of the case opening. From a design point of view this also helped assure that the Manhattan had enhanced water-resistance.
