Speedmaster

The Omega Speedmaster was created in 1957. It was the Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph model that NASA decided (in 1965) to use as its official timekeeper after rigorous evaluation and testing.

On 21st July 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on the moon, unfortunately leaving his Omega Speedmaster in the module!

 

It was therefore Buzz Aldrin, wearing his Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph, who was the first man to wear a wristwatch on the moon. This is the reason why this model of the watch is known as the Moon Watch (and should perhaps have been known as the Mark I model, seeing as the next watch in this range was named Mark II).

 

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Mark II appeared in 1969 and always has the legend “Professional” on it. This is not always true of the Mark III and Mark IV models that followed. The Mark II had four main versions that used the same movement as the original Moonwatch in the late 1960’s / early 1970’s (calibre 861).
